Major federal funding announcement: a new National Heat Pump Program presents a big opportunity for Nova Scotia
The potential benefits to Nova Scotia of electrifying our heating has been one of the main themes of my LinkedIn posts this year. Nova Scotia already leads Canada in heat pump adoption, and our reliance on expensive imported heating oil, limited access to natural gas, and growing supply of local clean electricity make the case for heat pumps stronger here than most other jurisdictions.
The new federal program aims to help up to 820,000 households switch:
🔹 Up to $10,000 for eligible below-median-income households and $2,000 for others
🔹 Stackable with provincial programs
🔹 Approval within 24 hours
Most heating systems are replaced after an unexpected breakdown, when homeowners choose whatever can be installed fastest. Making heat pumps the fast option can change the default.
Households switching from oil or electric baseboards could save an average of $1,400 a year while cutting emissions.
Let’s make the most of this opportunity for Nova Scotia.
