Wastewater services manage valuable resources as well as waste. Halifax Water’s biosolids processing facility upgrade and expansion highlights opportunities to recover nutrients, water and energy while improving environmental performance.
Assess the whole process
The useful question is how a proposed treatment process changes the overall balance of energy, emissions and recovered products. That requires considering processing energy, transport, product use and the treatment that would otherwise occur.
Potential heat recovery also depends on temperature, timing and a practical use for the heat. An energy opportunity becomes a project only when those requirements fit the facility and its customers.
This article describes Halifax Water’s infrastructure and resource-recovery opportunity. It does not identify a final technology selection or claim measured energy savings. The biosolids facility is distinct from Halifax Water’s Cogswell district energy initiative.
