A record year for commercial solar

Nova Scotia Power’s latest net-metering report is out, and 2025 was a record year for commercial solar in Nova Scotia. A total of 7.6 MW of new commercial net-metering capacity was added, bringing cumulative installed commercial capacity to 16.9 MW, an 82% increase over installed capacity at the end of 2024. Installations also rose sharply, with 99 new projects (+41% cumulatively), for a total of 342 systems.

Growth has accelerated since 2023, driven by:

  1. Higher program cap: Increasing the commercial net-metering cap to 1 MW, shaped with input from Solar Nova Scotia, has enabled larger, more viable projects.
  2. Federal incentives: Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) and enhanced accelerated depreciation continue to strengthen project economics and support further growth.

Note: Figures include both the Commercial Net Metering Program (27 kW–1 MW) and Self-Generating Option projects under 27 kW at commercial sites. Totals exclude Community Solar, behind-the-meter installations, and Solar Electricity for Community Buildings projects.
