Solar and resilient design at Halifax’s new Boat School
A waterfront community building brings energy-conscious design together with boatbuilding and youth programming.

The new Boat School at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic brings community programming and energy-conscious building design together on the Halifax waterfront.
The original post described the building as designed for high energy efficiency and climate resilience, including hurricane resilience. It noted support in part from the federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program and a role in expanding boatbuilding and sail-training programming for at-risk youth.
Integrate solar with the roof design
The post credited Treetop Solar with installing the solar array using a non-penetrating roof mounting approach. Solar mounting, roof performance and wind exposure need to be considered together, particularly at waterfront sites.
The project illustrates the value of coordinating community use, energy performance and resilience from the design stage. The design intentions described here should not be read as independently measured operating results.
