Inside the Scotiabank Centre energy retrofit
Heat recovery, ice storage, controls and lighting upgrades come together in a Halifax project I had the opportunity to work on.

Check out this great new video of the Scotiabank Centre energy retrofit in Downtown Halifax. I had the opportunity to work on this project for Halifax Regional Municipality, alongside Trane, Events East Group, and I.B. Storey Inc.
The upgrade included:
- A new ice plant enabling waste heat recovery to support facility heating
- 21 x CALMAC, a Portfolio of Trane ice batteries, making it one of the largest thermal energy storage systems in the region
- Upgraded building controls
- A full LED lighting retrofit
Beyond the energy savings, the project also significantly improved safety and operations for the building team. Great work by Ted Pecarski PMP, Kirk Fraser, Dave Romo, Ian Storey, and many others. The initial feasibility study was supported by the Government of Nova Scotia Nova Scotia Department of Energy through the Low Carbon Communities Program, exploring waste heat recovery across 13 ice pads in HRM.
The project later received federal funding through Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, alongside five other HRM retrofit projects. https://lnkd.in/evDJSpz5 (opens in a new tab)
