Rooftop solar on municipal buildings in Dartmouth
A historical municipal solar layout illustrates the importance of planning around the roof and building.

The accompanying roof layout was shared with a post about Halifax Regional Municipality’s facilities in Dartmouth. It illustrates how public-building rooftops can be assessed for solar generation.
Make the roof part of the energy plan
Available area is only the starting point. Roof condition, structural capacity, shading, maintenance access and electrical connections all influence a workable design. Solar planning should also account for the remaining life of the roof.
Public buildings can make energy improvements visible to the communities they serve. Their value is best assessed using expected generation, operating needs and lifetime costs, rather than panel count alone.
This historical example concerns municipal infrastructure. The supplied graphic retains its Spark Power attribution; no project capacity, completion date or measured savings is inferred from the layout.
